MEAT-BASED FOODS THAT MIRROR YOUR CAT’S EVOLUTIONARY DIET.
The Eastern wildcat is the closest relative of domestic cats. Despite years of breeding, the internal workings and eating anatomy of wild and domestic cats remain unchanged, so it’s no surprise that their food requirements remain the same too.
Our Biologically Appropriate™ principle is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness and variety of meats that nature evolved cats to eat, and exclude high-glycemic carbohydrates, vegetable proteins, synthetic additives and anything else that nature didn’t intend your cat to eat.
Your cat is biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. Equipped with sharp teeth, a single hinge jaw, and a short digestive tract, domestic cats are anatomically designed to break down protein and fat from meat. That’s why ACANA Meadowland is brimming with 75% meat including Cobb chicken, free-run turkey, nest-laid eggs, rainbow trout and blue catfish from regional farms and waters — all deemed fit for human consumption prior to arrival at our kitchens.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which contain very little meat, and are seldom from the human consumption chain.
Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Meadowland are FRESH or RAW and delivered daily to our kitchens, so they are loaded with goodness and taste. Refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meats, which means our fresh meat is never frozen. Our raw meats are flash-frozen at their source to lock in natural goodness. The other 1/2 of meat ingredients are dried or oils to provide a strong, natural source of animal protein and fat.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which seldom contain authentically fresh meats.
In nature, your cat’s diet would include an assortment of whole prey animals that provide all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals needed for peak health. ACANA Meadowland features an unmatched diversity of fresh poultry, eggs and fish, all in richly nourishing WholePrey™ ratios of meat, organs and cartilage to mimic your cat’s natural diet and nourish her naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements – only choline, zinc and copper are added.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which feature one or two meats, seldom in WholePrey™ ratios, and feature long lists of synthetic additives to make them ‘complete and balanced’.
ACANA is entirely free of pea or potato protein concentrates, commonly substituted for meat protein by many specialty cat foods to reduce costs. Instead ACANA derives its rich protein content from premium animal (not plant) ingredients that support lean muscle mass and a healthy body weight and nourish your cat according to her biological needs.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which are either typically low in protein (and high in carbohydrate) or use inappropriate plant protein ingredients to elevate their protein claims.
Your cat’s natural diet contains very few carbohydrates, which are recognized as a leading cause of obesity and diabetes. That’s why ACANA limits carbohydrates and replaces fast carbohydrates (such as rice, potato and tapioca) with low-glycemic, locally grown vegetables and fruits. This helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, reduces the potential for fat storage, and promotes overall good health.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which often exceed 50% carbohydrates, and feature high-glycemic ingredients such as potato, tapioca and rice – starches that digest quickly, causing blood glucose to spike and results in increased fat storage.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MEAT!
Domestic cats are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them too. How do you know if your cat’s food is Biologically Appropriate™? It’s simple, just answer our Biologically Appropriate™ ‘three meat questions’.
Entirely free of plant protein concentrates, ACANA Meadowland is loaded with 75% poultry, fish and eggs — more than twice as much as most pet specialty cat foods. Plus, all our meat is deemed fit for human consumption prior to inclusion in our foods.
ACANA Meadowland features 5 fresh meats in WholePrey™ ratios, including richly nourishing meat, organs and cartilage that supply nutrients naturally and completely.
In Mother Nature’s kitchen there are no synthetic supplements, and wildcats derive all of their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals. Muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; while bones and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.
ACANA WholePrey™ foods incorporate meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror Mother Nature, delivering nutrients naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements — only choline, zinc and copper are added.
ACANA Meadowland features an unmatched variety of local ingredients that are raised or fished by people we know and trust, deemed “fit for human consumption”, and then delivered to our Kentucky DogStar® kitchens fresh each day!

Your cat is an obligate carnivore and shares her anatomy with the Near Eastern wildcat – which means her body, teeth and jaws, and short digestive tract are designed for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.
Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your cat, ACANA Meadowland is rich in nourishing proteins and oils from meat, all the while limiting unwanted carbohydrates and synthetic additives.

Just like you, your cat or kitten is a unique individual and her feeding requirements will vary with breed, environment, age and activity.
That’s why we suggest using this chart as a starting point, and monitoring your cat or kitten’s weight and adjusting amounts as needed. We also recommend feeding her twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available.
When switching diets, it’s important to transition your cat or kitten as it takes time for her digestive system to adapt to the richer nutrient levels in ACANA. Over a 5-7 day period, gradually mix in ACANA, increasing the amount each day so that by day 7 you are feeding 100% ACANA.
† Use a standard 8-ounce measuring cup. Serve dry or lightly moistened. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.
Compared to conventional foods, ACANA delivers more calories from protein and fat and fewer calories from carbohydrates, reducing the risk of obesity and promoting your cat’s peak health.
