Modern dogs are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them, too. How do you know if your dog’s food is Biologically Appropriate? Simple. Just answer our Biologically Appropriate three meat questions.

Entirely free of grains or gluten, ACANA Grasslands is loaded with 70% quality animal ingredients — more than twice as much as some pet specialty dog foods.

1/2 of the meat, game, and fish in ACANA Grasslands are FRESH or RAW, supplying essential nutrients in their most nourishing form. Fresh means never frozen, so refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meat, while our raw meat is flash-frozen at the source to lock in goodness. The other half is dried or oils to provide a strong and natural source of richly nourishing animal protein and fat.

ACANA Grasslands features fresh meat in WholePrey ratios that include meat, organs, and cartilage or bone to supply nutrients naturally and completely.

    • Grass-fed Kentucky Lamb – meat, tripe, liver, and cartilage, fresh from regional farms.
    • Free-run Duck– fresh meat, organs, cartilage, and liver from regional farms.
    • Wild-caught Rainbow trout– fresh or raw from Idaho’s Snake River aquifers.
    • Free-run quail – fresh from South Carolina farms

In Mother Nature’s kitchen there are no supplements, and dogs and wolves derive all of their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals. Muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney & tripe supply vitamins and minerals; and cartilage and bone deliver calcium and phosphorus.

ACANA mirrors the natural diet, applying our MeatMath and incorporating WholePrey meat, organs, and cartilage or bone in ratios that deliver nutrients naturally. By providing a concentrated source of the nutrients your dog needs to thrive, you eliminate the need for long lists of additives. That’s why zinc is our only added supplement.

ACANA Grasslands features a rich variety of quality animal ingredients that are raised or fished by people we know and trust, and delivered to our Kentucky DogStar Kitchen fresh or raw!

They might look different, but your dog shares his anatomy with the gray wolf, which means he’s evolved as a carnivore and his body, teeth, jaws, and short digestive tract is adapted for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.

Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your dog, ACANA Grasslands is rich in nourishing meat protein and fat, while excluding grains and gluten, and long lists of synthetic ingredients found in some dog foods.

ACANA Grasslands benefits dogs of every breed and size. Just like you, your dog is a unique individual and his feeding requirements will vary with environment, age, and activity.

The table below provides a starting point, to be adjusted as needed to maintain optimum weight and peak conditioning. We suggest monitoring your dog’s weight and adjusting amounts as needed. We recommend feeding twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available.

† Use a standard 8-ounce measuring cup. Serve dry or lightly moistened. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

ACANA Grasslands is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages.

Compared to some dog foods, ACANA delivers more calories from protein and fat and less from carbohydrates, promoting your dog’s peak health.

Metabolizable Energy is 3405 kcal/kg (388 kcal/8 oz. cup), with 34% from protein, 24% from fruits and vegetables, and 42% from fat.

The gray wolf is ancestor to all domestic dogs. While years of breeding have produced hundreds of ‘different-looking wolves’, the internal workings of modern dogs and their wolf cousins remain unchanged, so it’s no surprise that their dietary needs remain the same too.

Our award-winning Biologically Appropriate philosophy is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness, and variety of meat that dogs have evolved to eat, while limiting the long lists of synthetic ingredients that don’t belong in your dog’s natural diet.

  • RICH IN MEAT (70%)

Your dog is biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. Equipped with sharp teeth, a single-hinge jaw, and a short digestive tract, domestic dogs are anatomically designed to break down protein and fat from animal ingredients. That’s why we loaded ACANA Grasslands with 70% meat, game, eggs, and fish, including grass-fed lamb, free-run duck & quail, cage-free eggs, and freshwater trout, all sourced from regional farms and lakes.

Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Grasslands are delivered to our kitchen FRESH or RAW, so they are loaded with goodness and taste. Fresh means never frozen, so refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meat, while our raw meat is flash-frozen at its peak to lock in natural goodness. The other 1/2 of meat ingredients are dried or oils to provide a strong, natural source of animal protein and fat.

In nature, dogs benefit from an assortment of whole prey animals that provide all the essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals needed for peak health. ACANA Grasslands features a diversity of fresh meat in richly nourishing WholePrey ratios of meat, organs, and cartilage or bone to mimic your dog’s natural diet and provide essential nutrients.  This eliminates the need for long lists of synthetic additives, so we only add zinc.

Entirely free of grains or gluten common in today’s dog foods, ACANA Grasslands derives its rich protein content from quality animal ingredients, not plants. This supports lean muscle mass and a healthy body weight, all while nourishing your dog according to his evolutionary needs.

Your dog’s natural diet contains almost no carbs at all. That’s why ACANA features vegetables and fruit in limited quantities, meaning no extra, non-essential carbs to be stored as body fat.

This helps maintain healthy blood-sugar levels, reduces the potential for fat storage, and promotes overall good health.

  1. Why did you change the name from ACANA Chicken & Greens to ACANA Adult Dog?
The reason for the name change is for greater consistency within the ACANA Heritage product line. This better reflects its All Life Stages nutrient profile.
  2. Has the formula changed?
No. There have been no changes to the formula. It is only a name change.
  3. Have you changed the names of any of your other ACANA diets? Are there plans to?
No, we have not changed the names of our other ACANA diets. Currently, we do not have plans to change the names of any of our existing diets.
  4. Does this affect both Canada and the USA?
The name change only affects Canada and our export market. This diet is not available in the U.S.
  5. Does this change affect the pricing of the product?
No, this name change does not affect pricing.
  6. When will my bags have the new name?
You can expect to see the new bags in-store by May 2018. However, there may be a longer transition period up to August 2018 as inventory is cleared out.

At Champion Petfoods, our vision is to be trusted by Pet Lovers everywhere, and that means producing dog and cat foods and treats of exceptional quality. Whenever we enhance our diets we use our Biologically Appropriate mandate to guide us. Recent enhancements to our ACANA Singles foods included an increase in meat content from 50% to 60%. While an increase in meat is usually a good thing, trying to balance the nutrients in a food that relies on one animal source can be challenging. After adding more fish to our ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel food, we were not satisfied with the new vitamin and mineral balance in the enhanced food. Rather than keeping one ACANA Singles food at 50% and moving the other foods to 60%, we’ve decided to discontinue ACANA Singles Wild Mackerel effective immediately.
