There is evidence indicating that humans lived alongside cats nearly 10,000 years ago in some parts of the middle east.

Cats began making themselves at home around human agricultural settlements, taking advantage of rodents and food scraps nearby.

Cats mostly lived outdoors, and natural selection favored cats who were more tame and able to cohabit with humans to gain access to food.

This relationship eventually led to the evolution of domestic cats as we know them today.

The 20th century brought new technology that allowed cats to live comfortably indoors with humans, like litter boxes and cat food.

Despite living more indoors, cats are still natural hunters and require a diet high in animal protein – like ACANA cat food!

  • What should I feed my cat?

    Cats have their own tastes and preferences, just like us, so what works best will be unique for every cat. If you have a kitten, we recommend starting with the ACANA® First Feast recipe. If your cat has reached maturity, the main thing to consider is finding a flavour they love. Any of our All-Life Stages or Adult Maintenance formulas will provide your adult cat with the nutrients they need.

    You can mix and match with wet and dry food any way you like, so experiment and see what works best for your cat. You can try:

    • 100% Canned: Feeding a 100% canned diet can be a great way to add moisture to your cat’s diet, or cater to a cat with a preference toward wet food over dry food.
    • Canned and Dry Combo: You can feed an ACANA® dry formula in the morning and switch to one of our canned options when the dinner bell rings. This is a great way to keep your cat interested and excited about mealtime.
    • As a Topper: Feeding ACANA® dry food with a topping of our canned recipes may be a great fit if you find your cat is picky and needs a bit of encouragement to eat.

  • When should I switch from kitten to adult food?

    You can begin the transition to an adult recipe when your cat has reached maturity, generally around 52 weeks (1 year) of age.

  • What is life-stage feeding?

    Life-stage feeding is choosing a diet designed to meet your cat’s optimal nutritional needs at a specific age or physiologic state. For example, feeding a Kitten diet to cats under one year of age or feeding an Adult Maintenance diet to a 3-year-old cat.

  • Should my cat eat a vegetarian or vegan diet?

    Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they depend on meat for survival, and their diet requires some nutrients found exclusively in animal ingredients. We believe that cats should be fed a diet rich in animal ingredients. Our ACANA® recipes contain 65-75%* animal ingredients to ensure your cat gets all the nutrients they require.

  • How does ACANA food help support my cat’s health?

    Every ACANA® recipe is formulated to support a cat’s unique health requirements. We have recipe options that give Pet Lovers variety while still providing their cats with all the nutrients they require. There are many flavors to choose from for adult cats, and several recipes are formulated for specific needs:

    • The Indoor Entrée recipe helps control hairballs and has balanced calories from protein and fat to help maintain a healthy weight
    • The First Feast recipe is specifically formulated to help support healthy muscle, brain development, and eye and brain function for growing kittens.
    • The Wild Prairie recipe is formulated to help support healthy digestion and healthy heart, eyes, skin, and coat.
