MOTHER NATURE MATCHED THE NUTRIENTS IN WHOLE GAME, FISH OR FOWL TO PERFECTLY MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUR CAT.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MEAT!
Modern cats are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them too. How do you know if your cat’s food is Biologically Appropriate™? Simple – just answer our ‘three meat questions’.
Entirely free of plant protein concentrates, ACANA Appalachian Ranch is loaded with 75% meat ingredients — more than twice as much as most pet specialty cat foods. Plus, all our meat and fish are deemed fit for human consumption prior to inclusion in our foods.
Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Appalachian Ranch are FRESH or RAW, supplying essential nutrients in their most nourishing form. Fresh means never frozen, so refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meats. The other half is dried or oils to provide a strong and natural source of richly nourishing animal protein and fat.
ACANA Appalachian Ranch features 5 fresh meats in WholePrey™ ratios that include meat, organs and cartilage to supply nutrients naturally and completely.
In Mother Nature’s kitchen there are no synthetic supplements, and wildcats derive all of their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals. Muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; while bones and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.
ACANA WholePrey™ foods incorporate meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror Mother Nature, delivering nutrients naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements — only choline, zinc and copper are added.
ACANA Appalachian Ranch features an unmatched variety of local ingredients that are raised or fished by people we know and trust, deemed “fit for human consumption”, and then delivered to our Kentucky DogStar® kitchens fresh each day!

Your cat is an obligate carnivore and shares her anatomy with the Near Eastern wildcat – which means her body, teeth and jaws, and short digestive tract is designed for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.
Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your cat, ACANA Appalachian Ranch is rich in nourishing proteins and oils from meat, all the while limiting unwanted carbohydrates and synthetic additives.

Just like you, your cat or kitten is a unique individual and her feeding requirements will vary with breed, environment, age and activity.
That’s why we suggest using this chart as a starting point, and monitoring your cat or kitten’s weight and adjusting amounts as needed. We also recommend feeding her twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available.
When switching diets, it’s important to transition your cat or kitten as it takes time for her digestive system to adapt to the richer nutrient levels in ACANA. Over a 5-7 day period, gradually mix in ACANA, increasing the amount each day so that by day 7 you are feeding 100% ACANA.
† Use a standard 8-ounce measuring cup. Serve dry or lightly moistened. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.
ACANA Appalachian Ranch is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages.
Compared to conventional foods, ACANA delivers more calories from protein and fat and fewer calories from carbohydrates, reducing the risk of obesity and promoting your cat’s peak health.
Metabolizable Energy is 3980 kcal/kg (454 kcal per 8 oz. cup), with 34 % from protein, 24 % from fruits and vegetables, and 42 % from fat.
MEAT-BASED FOODS THAT MIRROR YOUR CAT’S EVOLUTIONARY DIET.
The Near Eastern wildcat is the closest relative of domestic cats. Despite years of breeding, the internal workings and eating anatomy of wild and domestic cats remain unchanged, so it’s no surprise that their food requirements remain the same too.
Our Biologically Appropriate™ principle is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness and variety of meats that nature evolved cats to eat, and exclude high-glycemic carbohydrates, vegetable proteins, synthetic additives and anything else that nature didn’t intend your cat to eat.
Cats are biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. Your cat is anatomically designed to break down protein and fat from meat with her sharp teeth, single hinge jaw, and short digestive tract. That’s why we loaded ACANA Appalachian Ranch with 75% meat, including Angus beef, Yorkshire pork, Suffolk lamb and American bison, all sourced from regional farms, and all from animals deemed fit for human consumption.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which often contain very little meat, and are seldom from the human consumption chain.
Half of the meat ingredients in ACANA Appalachian Ranch are authentically FRESH or RAW and delivered daily to our kitchens, so they are loaded with goodness and taste. Refrigeration is the only way we preserve our fresh meats – our fresh meat is never frozen. Our raw meats are flash-frozen at their source to lock in natural goodness. The other 1/2 of meat ingredients are dried or oils to provide a strong, natural source of animal protein and fat.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which seldom contain authentically fresh meats.
In nature, your cat’s diet would include an assortment of whole prey animals that provide all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals needed for peak health. ACANA Appalachian Ranch features a diversity of fresh meats in richly nourishing WholePrey™ ratios of meat, organs and cartilage to mimic your cat’s natural diet and nourish her naturally. So you won’t find long lists of synthetic supplements – only choline, zinc and copper are added.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which feature one or two meats, seldom in WholePrey™ ratios, and feature long lists of synthetic additives to make them ‘complete and balanced’.
ACANA is entirely free of pea or potato protein concentrates commonly used in today’s cat foods. ACANA Appalachian Ranch derives its rich protein content from premium animal ingredients (not plants) that support lean muscle mass and a healthy body weight and nourish your cat according to her evolutionary needs.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which are either typically low in protein (and high in carbohydrate) or use inappropriate plant protein concentrates to elevate their protein claims.
Your cat’s natural diet contains very few carbohydrates, which are recognized as a leading cause of obesity and diabetes. That’s why ACANA Appalachian Ranch limits carbohydrates and replaces fast carbohydrates (such as rice, potato and tapioca) with low-glycemic, locally grown vegetables and fruits. This helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, reduces the potential for fat storage, and promotes overall good health.
Compare this to conventional cat foods which often exceed 50% carbohydrates, and feature high-glycemic ingredients such as potato, tapioca and rice – starches that digest quickly, causing blood glucose to spike and results in increased fat storage.
